The CSNM Lobbying and Advocacy Committee continues to advance initiatives that support nutrition management professionals and strengthen food and nutrition services across Canada. Here’s what we’ve been up to over the past month.

Advancing Long-Term Care Standards
The Gerontology Network (GN) Advocacy Toolkit 2026 is nearing completion and is currently under review by Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force. The toolkit will support Registered Dietitians, Nutrition Managers, and foodservice professionals in advocating for consistent, high-quality nutrition and food services in long-term care homes across Canada and promoting adoption of the Recommended National Standards for Long-Term Care Nutrition and Food Services (2022).

A related webinar, “From Standards to Action: Advancing the Adoption of National Nutrition and Food Service Standards in Long-Term Care,” was presented to the Dietitians of Canada Gerontology Network on February 5. A similar session for CSNM members will take place on April 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM ET.

Government and Advocacy Engagement
Advocacy discussions continue at both federal and provincial levels as legislatures resume following winter adjournments. Committee members are also strengthening relationships with health system leaders and government officials across Canada, including recent meetings with Nova Scotia Health and the Government of Yukon.

To support these conversations, the committee is developing practical tools for members, including a template advocacy presentation deck and an “Advocacy 101” resource to help members effectively engage with decision-makers.

Promoting the Profession
Work is underway to finalize a national advocacy infographic highlighting the scope and impact of the nutrition management profession and CSNM’s key advocacy priorities. The committee is also developing social media content to better promote existing advocacy resources and encourage member engagement.

School Food Program Initiatives
With the government focusing more time and money on school food initiatives, this remains a targeted focus for CSNM. Progress continues on a School Food Advocacy Toolkit, and CSNM just submitted an application to participate in the Nourishing Futures Forum in Montreal (June 2–4, 2026). Good luck! The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture has requested CSNM & SSNM support in the development of a buy local initiative for school food programs, which creates an opportunity for CSNM to advocate for nutrition management perspectives and support the integration of local foods into food service settings.
